[Summer in Grenoble] Marseille - Day 2: Château d'If, the Prison on an Island

June 14th, 2015

Marseille Vieux Port after lunch time.

My friends and I were waiting for this boat

It was one of the few boats that took us to Chateau d'If.
If I'm still remembering correctly, the boat ride was also free with Marseille City Pass.

My friends and I boarded the boat

and off we went to the sea!

There comes another boat that seems to be coming back from Chateau d'If

Me just capturing Marseille with my camera on the boat.

That was a very interestingly-built building on the right.
I could not tell what it was for.

However, something that caught my attention was not the building, but this Cruise Ship!

Oh, how I wish to go on a cruise trip.
Going on a cruise trip with friends would be especially awesome!

There might be many people who think cruise trips are tremendously expensive, but those of us who have already been on one know that's not entirely true. Just a quick look at the prices of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line cruise trips would be good enough to convince people that there are cruise trips out there, which don't cost an arm and a leg.
If you consider that basic food, hotel, and basic transportation are all included, cruise trips starts to look like a pretty good value for the price.

However, there's still one thing that makes these trips still too expensive for many of us to go on.
and that is.....
AIRPLANE!
Yeah, airline tickets are far too expensive.
They are the root of all evil!

Anyway, the conclusion is
that I want to go on a cruise trip really badly.

a bit later, the boat had already left the port and was out in the Mediterranean.

shortly after, we could see an island

with a some sort of fortress on top of it.

and there were people ready to return to Marseille after sightseeing.

We made it!

Follow the road...

While I was walking up the path, I just had to turn around take some pictures of the water.
The water of the Mediterranean Sea is so clear, that it's unbelievable to a certain extent.

Anyway, this is the lone island, which houses Chateau d'If
It was formerly used as a prison, but now it is just a tourist attraction.

This is the main building of Chateau d'If

There was a cafe nearby, so no worries if you need something to drink.

Priorities first, though.
My friends and I entered the main building of Chateau d'If

This is what it basically looks like.
There's not much to say.

Aaagh! Help! Let me out!!

Aaaagh! Help! Let me out!!! (2)

This was a locked door,
and darkness was the only thing that could have been seen through the window cell.
Even though the DSLR's built-in flash isn't a weak one, it couldn't brighten the dark pathway that lied ahead.

and that was pretty much all of the interior of Chateau d'If.

we made our way to the rooftop of Chateau d'If

through this spiral stairwell.

this is the view of the patio(?) from the rooftop.

Seems like this place isn't so far away from the mainland Marseille.

The rooftop feels like it mostly had been used by the guards.

However, this place is no longer a prison, nor was I a guard.
So it was a nice sight-seeing spot for a tourist like myself.

After seeing all it could offer,

my friends and I went down to the dock to wait for the next boat.

Hey there, little birdies!

Again, the water of Mediterranean Sea was very clear.

a while later, our boat came in

The first destination the boat took us was not the main land Marseille, but was some Island, which I'm not sure what it was.

some people got off, some people boarded.

the boat, then sailed out to the sea

and it took us back to Marseille Vieux Port.

Only one more Marseille post remains!
